The Lares Trek and Salkantay Trek are both excellent alternatives to the Classic Inca Trail, but they offer different journeys. Choose Lares for remote Quechua communities, quieter paths and cultural immersion. Choose Salkantay for dramatic glacier views, changing ecosystems and a longer expedition toward Machu Picchu.

  • Choose Lares if: culture, solitude and a four-day itinerary matter most.
  • Choose Salkantay if: glacier scenery, Humantay Lake and a five-day journey appeal more.
  • Difficulty: both are challenging and require acclimatization.
  • Highest point: Lares route about 4,830 m; Salkantay Pass about 4,650 m.
  • Current Lares Trip prices: Lares USD 640; Salkantay USD 520, subject to change.

Scenery: pastoral Andes or glaciated peaks?

Lares scenery is broad, quiet and deeply connected to daily Andean life. Hikers cross puna grassland, lakes and high passes while seeing alpacas, llamas, potato fields and small communities. The landscape is spectacular without feeling separated from the people who live there.

Salkantay is more dramatic in a classic expedition sense. The route rises beneath Humantay and the snowcapped Salkantay massif, crosses a high pass and then descends into warmer cloud forest. The rapid transition between ecosystems is one of its strongest features.

High mountain scenery on the Lares Trek compared with Salkantay
Lares reaches very high terrain while maintaining a strong connection to Andean communities.

Which trek is more cultural?

Lares is the clear choice for living culture. The route passes through or near Quechua-speaking communities where traditional farming, herding and weaving remain part of everyday life. A responsible visit depends on respect, permission before photography and fair direct purchases.

Salkantay passes settlements and agricultural areas, but its identity is primarily a mountain and nature trek. Travelers choose it for the high pass, snow peaks and cloud-forest descent.

Which trek is harder?

Both are demanding. The Lares itinerary compared here reaches approximately 4,830 m at Siclla Qasa, slightly higher than the commonly used Salkantay Pass figure of about 4,650 m. Thin air can make the Lares pass feel severe even when the daily distance is moderate.

Salkantay is usually longer and involves more sustained walking across five days. Day two climbs to the pass before a long descent, and fatigue accumulates as the route continues toward the cloud forest and Aguas Calientes.

Strong hikers may find either manageable after proper acclimatization. Travelers should train for consecutive days, not only a single long hike.

Altitude and acclimatization

Spend at least two or three nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before beginning either trek. Some travelers benefit from sleeping lower in the Sacred Valley while taking gentle acclimatization walks.

Headache, nausea, dizziness and unusual fatigue can indicate altitude illness. Tell the guide immediately if symptoms worsen. Fitness does not prevent altitude sickness. Read the detailed Lares altitude guide before deciding.

Route and itinerary

Lares in four days

The Lares Trip route travels from Cusco to Pumahuanca, camps near Puyoc, crosses Siclla Qasa toward Cuncani, visits the Lares Hot Springs and then connects through Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. Day four is dedicated to Machu Picchu and the return to Cusco.

Salkantay in five days

The Salkantay itinerary travels through Mollepata and Soraypampa, with an optional or scheduled visit to Humantay Lake. It then crosses Salkantay Pass, descends through Huayracmachay toward Chaullay, continues through warmer forest and reaches Aguas Calientes via the Llactapata and Hidroelectrica area. Machu Picchu is visited on day five.

Crowds and trail atmosphere

Lares generally sees fewer trekkers because several route combinations distribute visitors across the valley. Camps can feel remote, and community encounters are a central part of the journey.

Salkantay is one of Peru’s best-known alternative treks. Popular camps and the route near Hidroelectrica can feel busy in high season. It is still less permit-restricted than the Classic Inca Trail, but it should not automatically be described as uncrowded.

Permits and booking

Neither standard route uses the limited Classic Inca Trail permit. That provides more flexibility, but complete packages still depend on Machu Picchu admission, trains or other transport, hotels and campsite logistics.

Book early for May through September, particularly if a specific Machu Picchu circuit is important. Last-minute trail availability does not guarantee last-minute entrance tickets.

Weather and best season

May through September normally gives both routes the driest conditions. Nights can be below freezing near high camps. Salkantay also moves into humid, warmer terrain, so hikers must prepare for a wider range of temperatures.

Rain is more frequent from December through March. Official Peruvian tourism guidance warns that the Salkantay area can face landslide risk during the rainiest months. Operators may change routes for safety.

Cost comparison

The current Lares Trip price is USD 640 for the four-day Lares Trek and USD 520 for the five-day Salkantay Trek. These prices can change, and the less expensive headline is not always the lower total cost.

Compare Machu Picchu admission, accommodation, meals, baggage support, buses, trains and return transport. Confirm optional charges for sleeping bags, trekking poles, hot springs and upgrades.

Which is better for first-time trekkers?

Neither is ideal as a first hike without training. Lares may be shorter, but its maximum altitude is higher. Salkantay is longer and includes a demanding pass day followed by several additional days of movement.

First-time multi-day hikers should choose a well-supported group, train with hills and a loaded daypack, and arrive early enough to acclimatize.
