Where is Lares?

Lares is a small Andean town and district in the province of Calca, Cusco. It sits northeast of the Sacred Valley, surrounded by high passes, glacial lakes and Quechua-speaking farming communities. Travelers visit for the Lares Hot Springs and for trekking routes that cross the mountains toward the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.

Although Lares looks close to Cusco on a map, mountain roads make the journey longer than the straight-line distance suggests. Allow at least half a day for the transfer and avoid scheduling a tight connection immediately afterward.

Option 1: organized Lares Trek transport

The easiest option for hikers is to book a complete trek that includes hotel pickup and transport to the trailhead. The exact starting point depends on the chosen route. Lares trails are a network rather than one fixed path, and some itineraries start in Pumahuanca, Cuncani, Quishuarani or another community.

The Lares Trek 4 Days begins with an early pickup in Cusco and transport toward Pumahuanca. This removes the uncertainty of coordinating public vehicles, camping equipment and pack-animal support.

Organized trekking transport connects Cusco with the correct trailhead for the selected Lares route.

Option 2: private transfer from Cusco

A private car is the most convenient choice for travelers visiting the town or hot springs without trekking. It offers door-to-door pickup, space for luggage and the ability to stop in the Sacred Valley. The drive normally takes about 3.5 hours, but roadworks, rain and traffic can extend it.

Before confirming a vehicle, ask whether the quoted price includes waiting time, parking and the final 1.2 km connection between Lares town and the thermal-bath complex. If you plan to return the same day, agree on the pickup time and total price in writing.

Option 3: public transport through Calca

Independent travelers can first reach Calca from Cusco and then look for a local vehicle to Lares. Calca is the transport hub for this part of the Sacred Valley. Shared vans and local cars operate according to demand, so departure points and frequencies can change.

  1. Travel from Cusco to Calca.
  2. In Calca, ask for the current departure point for Lares-bound vehicles.
  3. Confirm the destination, fare and expected departure before boarding.
  4. On arrival in Lares, arrange the short transfer to the hot springs if needed.

Public transport can be economical, but it is less predictable than a private transfer. Carry cash in Peruvian soles, travel during daylight and keep enough flexibility for waiting time.

What the road is like

The first part of the journey follows paved Sacred Valley roads. After Calca, the route climbs into steeper Andean terrain with curves and major altitude changes. Conditions can vary during the rainy season, particularly from December through March.

Travelers sensitive to motion sickness may prefer a front seat and should avoid a heavy meal immediately before departure. Sunscreen and water remain useful even on cool or cloudy days.

Can you visit Lares as a day trip?

A day trip is possible, but it is long. A round trip from Cusco can involve seven hours or more in a vehicle before stops. Leaving early is essential if the main goal is to enjoy the thermal pools.

An overnight stay produces a more relaxed experience and allows time to explore the town. Travelers planning a multi-day hike should not treat the transfer as a day excursion; their operator will normally coordinate a separate trailhead and trekking schedule.

How to reach the Lares Hot Springs

The thermal baths are approximately 1.2 km from the main square. You can walk, take a local vehicle or include the final connection in a private transfer. The complex has several pools with different temperatures in a mountain setting.

Bring swimwear, a towel, sandals, warm clothing for afterward and cash for admission or small purchases. Prices and operating arrangements can change, so check locally before traveling.

When is the best time to travel?

May through September usually offers the driest conditions and clearer mountain views. These months are also colder at night and busier in Cusco. The rainy season brings greener landscapes but can cause slower journeys or route changes.

Altitude and acclimatization

Lares town is slightly lower than central Cusco, but the roads and trekking routes climb much higher. The four-day trek crosses Siclla Qasa at approximately 4,830 m / 15,846 ft. Spend at least two or three nights acclimatizing around Cusco or the Sacred Valley before a demanding hike.

Road transport does not remove altitude risk. Hydrate, avoid excessive alcohol and tell your guide if headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue worsens. See the Lares Trek altitude guide for a detailed profile.

What to pack for the journey

  • Sun protection
  • Rain jacket during the wet season
  • Warm layer for early morning and evening
  • Motion-sickness medication if normally required
  • Offline map and accommodation details
