The Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek and Lares Trek are three very different ways to experience the Andes and reach Machu Picchu. Choose the Inca Trail for archaeology and the Sun Gate, Salkantay for glaciers and changing ecosystems, or Lares for Quechua communities and quieter high-mountain paths.

Lares Trek: best for living culture

Lares connects glacial lakes, puna grassland, high passes and Quechua-speaking settlements. Agriculture, alpaca herding and textile production are not demonstrations created for visitors; they are part of everyday life in the valley.

The four-day route crosses Siclla Qasa at approximately 4,830 m before descending toward Cuncani and the Lares Hot Springs. It then connects through Ollantaytambo and by train to Aguas Calientes.

Choose Lares if respectful cultural contact, solitude and a flexible alternative to the permit-controlled Inca Trail matter most.

Classic Inca Trail: best for archaeology

The Inca Trail follows historic paving through cloud forest and archaeological complexes including Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca and Wiñay Wayna. Its signature moment is reaching Machu Picchu through Intipunku, the Sun Gate.

The route requires advance reservation through an authorized operator. Capacity is limited, and the trail closes throughout February for annual conservation and maintenance. High-season places can disappear months in advance.

Choose it if the historic path and walking arrival at Machu Picchu are more important than booking flexibility or solitude.

Salkantay Trek: best for mountain drama

Salkantay begins beneath Humantay and the snowcapped Salkantay massif, climbs to a pass around 4,650 m and descends into warmer cloud forest. The five-day route then continues through the Llactapata and Hidroelectrica area toward Aguas Calientes.

Its rapid transition from alpine terrain to subtropical vegetation creates the most varied natural journey of the three. It does not use the limited Classic Inca Trail permit, but it is a popular route and can feel busy in peak season.

Which trek is the hardest?

There is no simple winner. Lares reaches the highest point on the itineraries compared, making thin air its defining challenge. Salkantay involves a long pass day followed by more sustained walking over a five-day journey. The Inca Trail is lower but contains relentless stone stairs and fixed daily stages.

All three require acclimatization and training for consecutive hiking days. Spend at least two or three nights around Cusco or the Sacred Valley before departure.

Scenery

  • Lares: lakes, grazing valleys, villages, alpacas and broad high passes.
  • Inca Trail: cloud forest, stone roads, ruins and framed views toward Machu Picchu.
  • Salkantay: glaciers, Humantay Lake, a major mountain pass and cloud forest.

Permits and availability

The Inca Trail has the strictest availability. Lares and Salkantay offer more trail flexibility, but every complete journey still depends on Machu Picchu admission, accommodation and transport. Booking a trek does not create an entrance ticket if the desired Machu Picchu circuit is sold out.

Cost and value

Current Lares Trip prices are USD 640 for Lares, USD 845 for the Classic Inca Trail and USD 520 for Salkantay. Prices are subject to change. Compare inclusions such as Machu Picchu admission, trains, buses, hotels, camping support and baggage transport before judging value.

Best season

May through September usually brings the driest trekking weather. Nights at high camps are cold, while daytime sun can be strong. Rain increases from December through March, and landslide risk can affect mountain roads and Salkantay sections.

The Classic Inca Trail is unavailable in February. Lares and Salkantay do not share that blanket closure, but operators may alter or cancel routes when conditions are unsafe.

Which trek has the best Machu Picchu arrival?

The Inca Trail wins this category because hikers approach through the Sun Gate. Lares travelers normally arrive in Aguas Calientes by train, while the standard Salkantay itinerary approaches via Hidroelectrica before visiting Machu Picchu the next day.

Which is least crowded?

Lares is generally the quietest because its trail network has several variations. The Inca Trail is capacity-controlled but groups share the same corridor. Salkantay is less regulated and has become one of Peru’s most popular alternative treks.

Final recommendation

Pick Lares for culture, the Inca Trail for history or Salkantay for wild scenery. Do not choose only by price: the right trek is the one whose central experience matches the reason you came to Peru.
